Hard-to-find cereals (and other stuff)
December 14, 2006
So I was looking through my bookmarks today and rediscovered a website where you can find classic grocery products that your local supermarket hasn’t carried in years.
The site is called Home Town Favorites, and they specialize in “old-time favorites and regionally exclusive foods.”
A lot of these products are cereals, some of which I’m surprised they still make.
I think I’ll order me a box of King Vitaman.

Organic Honey Macadamia Grainfest cereal review
December 10, 2006
I like Trader Joe’s. In my world, when it comes to grocery shopping, you have supermarkets on one hand — Ralph’s, Vons, Albertsons — and you got Joe’s on the other.
If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s in your area, I apologize. Hopefully you’ll get one soon. They have lots of unique products that are difficult to impossible to find anywhere else, packed into a relatively small space. Everyone who works there is always happy and friendly, and I’m not sure why. I guess it’s part of being a hippy which most of them are. I’m certainly not complaining though.
On with the cereal review. I grabbed a box of Organic Honey Macadamia Grainfest because I’ve never had a cereal with macs before. Usually you get almonds, pecans, or walnuts. I had to try this.
The first thing I noticed as I poured the stuff into my bowl was the macs were whole. I was expecting slices or chunks, since macadamias are an expensive nut, but this was pretty awesome.
The rest of the cereal was good, too: organic corn flakes, wheat flakes, and bran noodles, sweetened with organic honey in true Trader Joe’s organic fashion. In fact I don’t think anything processed ever makes it off the truck at Joe’s.
Thumbs up.

Breaking news: CLASSIC TRIX BALLS ARE BACK!
December 07, 2006
Keith over at It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Blogging) reported yesterday that General Mills has gone retro with Trix cereal.
That’s right, they’ve done away with the fruit-shaped puffs that were introduced back in 1991 and reverted back to the classic ball-shaped puffs, a la Kix!
He writes:
I’m at Target, aiming to fix my household lack of Total Raisin Bran, when I look over and see Trix. But it’s not the lame fruit shapes I see, THEY ARE BACK TO THE COLORED BALLS!!! I am in no way kidding when I say I stood there, put my hand over my dropped jaw and quietly said “Oh my God”. It was really quite touching.
Touching indeed. Lump in throat accomplished, Keith. I literally stood up and saluted upon reading this.
Why? Because Trix was SO much better that way. The ball-shaped puffs had that awesome rough texture, crunchier constitution, and a stronger citrus taste. The fruit-shaped puffs really dulled down the flavor and had this weird waxy coating.
This is HUGE news, folks. I’ll be heading to Target right after work. What the hell, I should just take the day off.

New gadget: The Cereal Dispenser from VINÇON
December 06, 2006
It’s attractive AND modern, according to their website.
VINÇON is a chain of retail shops in Spain that sells gadgets and gizmos for the contemporary home. Sort of like Sharper Image, right? Well, Target maybe.
Anyway, their latest product is the Cereal Dispenser. As you can see, it looks like a cross between a blender and a gumball machine. But you put your cereal in it, man.
It’s available in two colors: blanco and negro, naturalmente.
I stole this story from popgadget
This post is dedicated to missing gadget lover, James Kim. Say a prayer, people.

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal…
November 30, 2006
…is the name of an online comic strip that has nothing at all to do with cereal. Except the name. Which is why I’m mentioning it on this site.
Yeah. It’s been a slow news week.
Anyway it’s a daily comic, and it’s pretty funny most of the time. It’s written and drawn by Zach Weiner. Zach started drawing SMBC while attending Pitzer College in Claremont, close to my old stomping grounds.
So check it out if you’re not already a fan. You might be glad you did — depending on the quality of the comic that particular day, natch.
P.S. Shout-out to that hot blond chick at my work. Thanks for being a loyal reader, Shanna.

Frosted Flakes 1/3 Less Sugar cereal review
November 27, 2006
I’ve seen this on the store shelves for a year, maybe two. “Wow, diet cereal for fat kids,” I thought. Along with the reduced sugar Frosted Flakes, you can also find Froot Loops 1/3 Less Sugar, and some Big G varieties like Cocoa Puffs. I figured it’s about time I give one of them a shot.
I picked up a box at the Albertson’s in Valencia. The first thing I noticed was that it came with a free XBox mini game inside, which sealed the deal. More on that later.
So here’s the deal. It tastes pretty close to regular Frosted Flakes — that is, until you pour the milk over it. Then you’re lucky to get one or two good spoonfuls before you’re basically left with a bowl of Corn Flakes. It’s just not the same.
“But what if I’m watching my calories, shouldn’t I consider this a healthier alternative?” you may ask. The answer is no. Although there are only 8 grams of sugar per serving compared to classic Frosted Flakes’ 12 grams, they both have THE SAME AMOUNT OF CALORIES. “But what if I’m a diabetic –” NO AGAIN. One serving still equals 1.5 carbohydrate exchange points.
This new marketing tactic has the word “misleading” written all over it. Stick to the originals.
The happy ending is that I got a cool little Xbox mini game. It’s the Motorcycle Madness one:

I’ve read some blogs and forum postings making fun of these low-tech XBox-branded LCD games, but I think it’s pretty sweet for a free cereal prize. It’s got some catchy monophonic music and sound effects, too.
Speaking of Xbox, I traded in my aging PS2 last week for a 360. What a HUGE difference, especially on an HD screen. It’s gorgeous. I waited a year to see how the PS3 would pan out. Sorry Sony, the 360 wins. Well, maybe a Wii for the living room too. How’s that for off-topic?

Evanston, Illinois gets Cereality
November 20, 2006
Real quick:
Cereality, the self-described “Cereal Bar & Cafe”, opened it’s latest shop this morning in Evanston, IL.
The new cafe is located at 1622 Sherman Ave, right next to Barnes & Noble in the Sherman Plaza.
This will be the patent law-abusing company’s fourth location, with more on the way in 2007.

Cinnamon Shredded Wheat cereal review
November 20, 2006
Shredded wheat is one of the oldest cereal variations still around, along with oatmeal and corn flakes. A lot of people don’t like shredded wheat because of it’s heaviness and lack of flavor. Shredded wheat is all about texture, not taste. To enjoy a bowl, you must add flavor — a sprinkle of sugar, or some sliced fruit.
Post has introduced a new flavor for an old favorite. Cinnamon Shredded Wheat is such a simple idea, but it works well. You get a nice hint of dark cinnamon and brown sugar baked into each biscuit. The outer coating washes away quickly in milk, so here’s my tip: eat them dry, finger food style, with a glass of milk on the side.
